Seventh event

The seventh NI Workplace Health Network event took place on 9 March 2009 and discussed the issue of Managing the transition from working life. This looked at the health effects of both retirement and redundancy and also highlighted some support mechanisms.

This theme was chosen as a consequence of the ongoing economic downturn and also to coincide with the ongoing changes within the public sector, including the health sector, as a result of the Review of Public Administration.  The event was chaired by UTV's Business Correspondent, Jaime Delargy.

Speakers included Baroness May Blood who discussed her life experiences and the problems faced as a consequence of becoming unemployed. Patricia McKeown from Unison gave valuable information on the support services available to trade union members, while Rolanda Black from the Labour Relations Agency discussed the legal implications around redundancy and retirement.

Owen Metcalfe from the Institute of Public Health in Ireland highlighted the health effects of being unemployed (compared to those in employment), while Sandra Herdman from the Police Rehabilitation and Retraining Trust indicated the challengesfaced by the PSNI over recent years and discussed the options chosen and the benefits gained by introducing training programmes.

Patricia and Baroness Blood gave verbal presentations, so their information is not included below.
