Musculoskeletal Disorders

Like Stress, Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD) has been shown to be one of the major factors associated with work-related illnesses.

Statistics from HSE GB have indicated that over 10.7 million working days are lost each year due to Musculoskeletal Disorders within the UK.

In Northern Ireland, HSENI and the District Councils have worked closely with numerous organisations via the Backs NI initiative to raise awareness of the issues.

This campaign has been used to raise awareness of successful mechanisms to reduce the need for manual handling where possible i.e. making the job as automated as possible. Specific awareness raising initiatives have also taken place within nursing homes and within the construction sector (focussing on the automation process for the lifting of kerbstones). Literature has also been made available to many workplaces.
